Skating with Wayne Gretzky at his fantasy camp in Las Vegas

Last weekend I had the honor of being a celebrity hockey player in Wayne Gretzky’s Fantasy Camp in Las Vegas. It was one of the greatest experiences of my long career in the game of hockey. Playing with Wayne Gretzky in NY in the late 90’s, along with other greats such as Messier, Graves, Leetch, and Richter has been a lifelong dream and memory for my brother Chris and I. What I remember most of playing with Wayne was his professionalism, his personality, and the way he treated everyone around him. I am honored to say Chris and I know Wayne and his family and have a friendship with him. Darren Blake, Wayne’s business partner, has done great job with WDG Enterprises – www.waynegretzky.com.

For the first time since he was a kid, Bob Lachance needed to figure out what to do next.

Four years at Boston University had prepared him for eight years of professional hockey, including a short stint in his home state with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Two and a half more years in Europe, and his hockey career was just about over.

“Playing hockey, you’re kind of in a dream world,” Lachance said. “You think you’ll be playing hockey forever. You don’t realize there’s life after sports.”

Since the Bridgeport Sound Tigers debuted in 2001, 262 men have played for them. Of those, 68 are not on a professional roster this season. From Matt Eldred in 2003 to Jean Desrochers earlier this season, each has had to face a transition.

“You start out in high school hockey, in junior,” said Peter Ferraro, who is sitting out his first professional season since 1994. “You make strides to the Olympics, to college, and once you hit pro: `This is the pinnacle, what I’ve always dreamt of. What’s after this?’”

InterSports President and New York Rangers alum Peter Ferraro joined Jim Cerny and Steven Gelbs on this week’s Rangers Radio show. Ferraro was the first-round pick of the Rangers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, making him the first New York native ever selected in the first round.

In addition to the Rangers, Ferraro played with the Penguins, Bruins and Capitals. Peter and brother Chris became the first identical twins to play on the same NHL team when they played with the Blueshirts in 1995-96.

Ferraro will be one of the Rangers alumni participating in the Skate to The Garden Tournament.
